When Bhima came to know that his father was killed by Rama. And Bhima is eager to avenge his father's death with Lord Rama. In order to take revenge from Rama, Bhima did severe penance of Lord Brahma.

Lord Brahma appeared to him in a pleased manner. And gave a blessing to Bhima and also blessed the victorious house. After receiving a boon from Lord Brahma, Bhima demon became very powerful. Bhima Raksha had spread his terror all around. That ruthless demon had not only convinced humans and animals but also gods and goddesses. Everyone was afraid of his terror. He also defeated the gods in battle. Bhima Rakshasa stopped all recitation after becoming powerful.

And on his own strength, he had started doing arrogance. Bhima the demon began to think of everyone as small or powerless. All Dev Gun, fed up with his atrocities, went to Lord Shiva. Shiva came near and took shelter from the gods and pleaded for help. Lord Shiva gave him shelter and asked to be sure. Lord Shiva went to battle with Bhima. Bhima demon was killed by Lord Shiva and burnt to ashes.

In this way Lord Shiva freed the gods and humans from the terror of Bhima demon. And all the gods requested Lord Shiva to live in this place. Therefore Shiva was seated in a huge Shivling in Bhimashankar Jyotiling. Since then, this Jyotirlinga is known all over the world.
